10 Things to Encourage Employees to Save on Commuting Costs

  1. Promote incentives for carpooling, use of public transportation, bicycling or walking to work.
  2. Impose a disincentive by charging a parking fee for single-occupant cars and trucks to park in the company parking lot.
  3. Coordinate employees’ hours to coincide with public transportation timetables.
  4. Provide premium parking in the company parking lot for carpoolers and drivers of hybrid vehicles.
  5. Provide easily accessible bike racks (and shelter them from the elements if possible).
  6. Provide shower and locker room facilities for bicycle and pedestrian commuters
  7. Provide a company shuttle from the nearest public transportation stop to your place of business.
  8. Allow employees to telecommute whenever possible.
  9. Encourage audio or video conferencing when possible.
  10. Allow flex time (compress work week into 4 ten-hour days instead of the traditional 5 eight-hour days).
