This year’s Earth Day celebration has come and gone. But the once a year event serves as an important reminder that there are things every business can do to act ‘green’ every day.

Being respectful of the environment has some unexpected perks: not only can it improve your reputation in the community; it can save your company money. So not only does it make good environmental sense to go green, it also makes good business sense. According to several recent studies, when people know a company is mindful of its impact on the environment and society, consumers are as much as 65 percent more likely to buy its products and services and up to 60 percent more likely to be loyal customers to companies they feel are practicing sustainability.

With this in mind, all companies should strive to develop and implement sustainable business practices. Here are some easy and cost effective tips any business can institute tips to get started on going green.

  • Print double-sided. Many documents can now be sent electronically, but sometimes printouts are necessary. Before you hit “Print,” select “double-sided.” In fact, make “double-sided” your default setting so it’s automatic each time. Keep this in mind when making copies as well.
  • Minimize power use. Make sure your office equipment is efficient and has multiuse capabilities. Instead of having several printers scattered throughout your business, purchase and use printers that can also copy, scan, sort and fax. This will save you on equipment costs and conserve energy.
  • Use Electronic Document Management systems. Today, it’s relatively easy take advantage of electronic filing, proofing and communicating with your computer. This eliminates precious time and energy on creating bulky files, faxes and printouts. You’ll save money on file cabinets, file folders and paper. Not to mention the time you’ll save by having things electronically organized.
  • Recycle. Initiate an office recycling program. Recycle paper, cardboard, glass, aluminum, toner cartridges, batteries and more. When you can’t recycle, try to reuse items. Many, if not most local governments, will supply you with recycling containers and information on how to make your office more efficient.
  • Develop sustainability policies and procedures. Lead by example. Consider establishing a “green team” that constantly thinks about ways to make your business more environmentally friendly. This team can also educate the staff on green habits.

The community, consumers and employees value companies that have green initiatives and practices. It can often determine whom they’ll do business with and it can improve loyalty of your current clients. With these simple practices, it’s easy to improve the efficiency of your business, cut costs and reduce your company’s impact on the environment. In business, it pays to make every day Earth Day.
